T-Mobile's cellular network went down across the United States on the afternoon of Monday, July 27, 2026, with more than 60,000 user-submitted reports flooding Downdetector by around 5:00 p.m. ET and phones across the country switching from their familiar 5G indicator to a single word in the status bar: SOS.

The Outage: What Happened

Reports of problems began arriving at Downdetector around 4:00 p.m. ET on July 27. By 5:00 p.m. ET, the site had logged more than 61,000 reports with reports not centered in any single region, pointing toward a possible nationwide disruption. Both cellular service and 5G Home Internet appear to have been affected simultaneously, though one account suggested the home internet side may not have been impacted in every area.

The outage appears to be widespread, with subscribers across the United States unable to place calls, send texts, or use mobile data. A thread on Reddit drew thousands of complaints from T-Mobile customers, and staff members at multiple technology outlets confirmed that their own devices were affected and unable to use any cellular service.

T-Mobile had not announced an estimated timeline for when service would be fully restored as of Monday evening. In response to individual users on X, the company said it was investigating. Some subscribers reported intermittent connectivity while others described a total loss of signal.

What SOS Mode Means

The SOS indicator appearing on users' screens is not a sign that a phone is broken. When a phone enters SOS mode, it means the device cannot connect to its carrier network but users should still be able to call 911 in an emergency, as the device will attempt to reach emergency services through any available network signal.

On an iPhone, the status bar displays "SOS" or "SOS Only" to indicate the device has lost its connection to T-Mobile's towers while retaining limited emergency access. Standard calls, texts, and mobile data do not work in this state.

The outage has been reported as affecting mobile signal, data connectivity, and 5G home internet alike.

Where Reports Are Coming In From

Downdetector's outage map showed reports concentrated heavily on the East Coast, with the largest volumes from New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles. Reports have also come in from Florida, California, North Carolina, Washington state, Minnesota, Louisiana, and Hawaii.

Reddit users in Utah, Missouri, Arizona, Illinois, Virginia, Georgia, and California have all reported problems with their devices. T-Mobile's customer service account on X responded to individual users throughout the afternoon, acknowledging reports and saying the company was looking into the situation.

How to Check the Outage Map

To see whether your specific area is affected before troubleshooting your device, Downdetector's T-Mobile page aggregates live user reports and displays a geographic heat map. Reports cluster by city, so you can see whether your metro area is heavily affected or on the edge of the disruption zone.

Downdetector counts reflect submitted user reports, not confirmed affected-subscriber totals the actual number of impacted customers is likely far larger than the report figures suggest.

What to Do While Waiting for Service

T-Mobile's own guidance for network outages points to one practical option: Wi-Fi Calling.

According to T-Mobile's support page, when a network outage is in effect, the carrier recommends switching to Wi-Fi Calling for calling and texting if a Wi-Fi connection is available. T-Mobile notes it will notify customers once service has been restored.

To enable Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular → Wi-Fi Calling and toggle it on. Android users can find the option in the Phone app → More → Settings → Calls → Wi-Fi Calling. Once enabled, calls and texts route through the internet connection using the regular T-Mobile number, bypassing the cellular network entirely.

Wi-Fi Calling requires an active T-Mobile account, a supported device, a working Wi-Fi connection with upload and download speeds of at least 2 Mbps, and a registered E911 address.

T-Mobile customer support is also reachable at 611 from a T-Mobile phone or at 1-800-937-8997 from any other line. T-Mobile Customer Care representatives are available from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. PT.

What T-Mobile Has Said

T-Mobile had not issued a public root-cause statement by publication time. The company told FOX 5 New York: "We are looking into this and will get back to you soon." T-Mobile's network outages support page describes potential causes as ranging from routine tower maintenance to unforeseen circumstances affecting infrastructure but no incident-specific explanation was confirmed for the July 27 event.

The affected customer count also remains unconfirmed. Downdetector figures represent reports filed by individual users, not a verified subscriber total.

T-Mobile's last broadly comparable nationwide disruption came in February 2023, when tens of thousands of users similarly reported SOS mode across multiple states. In that case, T-Mobile's then-President of Technology Neville Ray attributed the disruption to a third-party fiber interruption and reported near-normal operations by early the following morning.

Troubleshooting Steps During a Carrier Outage

During a widespread carrier disruption, device-level fixes will not restore the cellular connection. Restarting a phone, toggling airplane mode, or removing and reinserting a SIM card may briefly force the device to search for a new tower connection but if the network itself is disrupted, the result will remain SOS.

The most effective interim steps are:

  • Connect to Wi-Fi and enable Wi-Fi Calling as described above

  • Use iMessage or WhatsApp over Wi-Fi for messaging if cellular texts are failing

  • Avoid repeatedly rebooting it will not speed up restoration and drains battery

Check Downdetector and T-Mobile's network status page for updates as the carrier works to restore service.
