Bradley Barcola Scores as PSG Rule Him Not for Sale

Bradley Barcola scored France's second goal in a 3-0 World Cup round-of-32 win over Sweden at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 30 June, sending Didier Deschamps' side into a last-16 meeting with Paraguay on 4 July. The 23-year-old forward's goal came on the same day Paris Saint-Germain told Arsenal and Liverpool their target was not for sale this summer.

Barcola's Goal Doubles France's Lead

Michael Olise threaded a pass through the legs of Sweden defender Gustaf Lagerbielke before Barcola took a touch and lashed the ball past goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström in the 53rd minute. Kylian Mbappé had opened the scoring with a curling finish in first-half stoppage time and added a third in the 74th minute, both created by Olise.

ESPN described the result as France's biggest World Cup knockout win since their 3-0 defeat of Brazil in the 1998 final. It set up a round-of-16 tie against Paraguay, who had eliminated Germany the previous round.

Olise's assist for Barcola was his fifth of the tournament, the most by any player at a men's World Cup since West Germany's Thomas Hässler in 1994, according to ESPN's match report.

Deschamps set France up with Mike Maignan in goal behind a back four of Jules Koundé, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Digne, with Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot anchoring midfield in front of Dembélé, Olise, Barcola and Mbappé. Sweden manager Graham Potter started Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak in attack, but his side managed only seven shots to France's 25 across the match.

A crowd of 80,663 attended the Tuesday afternoon kickoff at MetLife Stadium, the venue that will also host the 19 July final. ESPN reported the figure pushed the expanded 104-match tournament's cumulative attendance past five million for the first time.

It was Deschamps' first match back on the touchline since he briefly returned to France for his mother's funeral during the group stage. He bowed toward Mbappé when the captain was substituted in the 85th minute.

France's Group-Stage Run

France finished top of Group I with three wins from three matches, beating Senegal 3-1, Iraq 3-0 and Norway 4-1. Mbappé's brace in the opening win over Senegal took him past Olivier Giroud as France's all-time leading scorer, a milestone covered in detail after France's 3-1 win over Senegal.

Mbappé's brace against Sweden took his career World Cup tally to 18 goals in 18 games, one goal behind Argentina's Lionel Messi, who holds the all-time record of 19. Messi reached that mark during Argentina's win over Jordan, detailed in Argentina's 3-1 victory. Mbappé also became the outright leading scorer in World Cup knockout-stage history, moving to ten goals in that phase and passing Brazilian forwards Leônidas and Ronaldo.

"It is a new competition that has started today," Mbappé said through a translator after the match.

PSG Hold Firm on Barcola's Price

Barcola's performance arrived alongside separate reporting on his club future. The Athletic's David Ornstein reported that PSG consider the winger not for sale regardless of incoming signings, and value him well above the roughly £116m Manchester City are paying for Elliot Anderson.

PSG can afford to take that stance in part because Gonçalo Ramos, Lee Kang-in and Randal Kolo Muani are all leaving the club this summer, freeing squad space and wage budget. AC Milan confirmed Ramos's arrival on a contract through 2031 the same day Ornstein's report emerged.

PSG are also pursuing Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche and have long tracked RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, incoming attacking options that Ornstein suggested could eventually change the club's stance on Barcola.

Arsenal have been looking for a wide forward to share the left-flank workload carried by Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, while Liverpool want to add width following Mohamed Salah's exit. GiveMeSport correspondent Ben Jacobs said the picture could still shift: "Arsenal is a situation that's worth keeping an eye on."

There is recent history between the two clubs. PSG beat Arsenal on penalties in the 2025/26 Champions League final in May, retaining the title a year after winning it for the first time. Barcola played a bench role in that final after starting the campaign as a regular.

Contract Talks Remain Stalled

Barcola signed a five-year contract with PSG in August 2023 after moving from Lyon, tying him to the club through June 2028, according to his official PSG player profile. Reporting from Ornstein and GiveMeSport describes him as reluctant to sign an extension, a factor PSG are weighing alongside their asking price.

His output dipped this season compared with PSG's double-winning 2024/25 campaign. Barcola scored 13 goals and provided seven assists in 49 appearances in 2025/26, as manager Luis Enrique rotated his front line between Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué.

What Happens Next

France play Paraguay in the round of 16 on 4 July in Philadelphia, with the winner advancing to a quarter-final against Canada or Morocco. The Premier League transfer window stays open into September, and no bid for Barcola had been publicly confirmed by Arsenal, Liverpool or PSG as of 1 July.

Barcola is due back in training with the France squad this week, still without a resolution to his PSG contract talks.
