World Cup 2026 Bracket Predictor: All 16 Last-32 Ties Set

The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage finished on June 27 after 72 matches and 215 goals, a tally confirmed by FIFA's own group-stage statistics, and the result confirmed all 32 teams for the Round of 32 knockout bracket, which is scheduled to begin June 28 with South Africa against Canada in Los Angeles.

The draw locks in a fixed, single-elimination bracket running from the Round of 32 through to the July 19 final at New York New Jersey Stadium. Every one of the 32 qualifiers now knows its exact opponent, date and venue for the first knockout match, with no redraws possible from this point forward.

How the bracket reached this stage

The expanded 2026 tournament split 48 teams into 12 groups of four. Each side played three group matches, and the top two finishers in every group advanced automatically. The remaining eight knockout places went to the best third-placed teams across all 12 groups, ranked first by points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then a team conduct score based on cards, and finally the FIFA World Ranking if every other tiebreaker is exhausted, under FIFA's official tiebreaker rules.

That third-place race produced one of the tournament's defining moments. Algeria needed at least a draw against Austria in their final Group J match to leapfrog Iran into the last available third-place slot. Algeria took a 3-2 lead through Riyad Mahrez in the third minute of stoppage time, before Austria's Sasa Kalajdzic, on the pitch only seconds after coming on as a substitute, headed in an equaliser in the 96th minute to make it 3-3. The result put Algeria third in Group J on four points, enough to take the final third-place berth, and sent both Algeria and Austria through while eliminating Iran, who finished the group stage unbeaten but without enough points to qualify.

Nine of Africa's ten World Cup 2026 qualifiers reached the Round of 32, the continent's best showing in tournament history, according to Al Jazeera's count of the confirmed qualifiers. Algeria, Cape Verde, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal and South Africa all advanced, with only Tunisia eliminated at the group stage.

The confirmed Round of 32 schedule

Sixteen knockout matches make up the Round of 32, spread across June 28 and July 3, with dates and host cities confirmed by FIFA's official match schedule.

DR Congo's tie with England on July 1 comes after the team qualified as the third-placed finisher from Group K, alongside group winners Colombia and runners-up Portugal. Ghana, by contrast, advanced as the third-placed side from Group L, where England finished first and Croatia second. The official FIFA knockout bracket confirms every pairing and the route each team would take toward the final.

From the Round of 32, the bracket moves to the Round of 16 between July 4 and July 7, quarter-finals on July 9 to 11, semi-finals on July 14 and 15, a third-place match in Miami on July 18, and the final on July 19.

What a bracket predictor actually tracks

A bracket predictor and a statistical simulator solve different problems. A predictor asks fans to pick winners through each round of the now-confirmed 32-team field. A simulator runs probability models, sometimes thousands of times over, to estimate how likely each outcome is.

FIFA runs its own free Bracket Challenge through the official Play Zone, where users rank group finishers and pick a winner at each knockout stage to build a path to the title. Separate from FIFA's game, economist J. James Reade publishes a probability model for Economics Observatory that simulates the bracket using attack and defence ratings built from match data. According to that model, Argentina hold the highest title probability among the 32 qualifiers, with Spain and France each near 12% and England near 9%, figures the publication updates as the knockout rounds are played. Nate Silver and Joseph George run a separate model, called PELE, through Silver Bulletin, which the publisher says typically simulates the tournament 100,000 times and was run 200,000 times on the morning the knockout stage began.

These percentages are model outputs from named, attributed sources, not official FIFA probabilities, and they will shift after every match is played.

The bracket's biggest storylines

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are each playing their sixth men's World Cup, the first two players in history to do so, and the confirmed draw keeps alive the possibility of a final between them. Argentina and Portugal sit on opposite sides of the bracket, which rules out any meeting before July 19. Both captains would need to win four straight knockout matches to reach that final.

England's path runs first through DR Congo on July 1 in Atlanta. A win would send England into the Round of 16 against the winner of Mexico versus Ecuador, not against Mexico automatically, since Ecuador finished as one of the eight qualifying third-placed teams and must still win its own Round of 32 tie.

South Africa and Canada have met only once before, a 2007 friendly in Durban that South Africa won 2-0. Canada has lost both of its previous competitive matches against African opposition, falling to Cameroon at the 2001 Confederations Cup before a later defeat to Morocco.

Europe placed 13 teams in the Round of 32, the most of any confederation under the new 48-team, 12-group format, while South America sent five, CONCACAF three and Asia two.
