They arrive in Monterrey as reigning African champions: the Confederation of African Football ruled in March 2026 that Senegal had breached final-match regulations by briefly walking off the pitch during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, and awarded the title to Morocco as a 3-0 forfeit. Senegal has appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The sharpest contrast between the two sides is up front. Brobbey, of Sunderland, arrived at this tie with three goals from three matches, all in the group stage. Ismael Saibari, of PSV, also reached three goals before kick-off, one against Brazil, one against Scotland, and one against Haiti.

The players who could decide it

Achraf Hakimi is Morocco's captain and chief outlet from right-back. His position puts him directly up against the Dutch left side, where Koeman tends to rotate Nathan Aké and Jan Paul van Hecke. Denzel Dumfries holds down the Dutch right, and it's his runs forward, on the opposite flank, that are expected to feed Brobbey and Gakpo.

Virgil van Dijk leads a Dutch defence that didn't lose a single group match. Van Hecke, signed by Tottenham from Brighton on June 18, 2026, according to the London club's announcement, plays as one of three centre-backs in a system Koeman frequently drops into a back five without the ball.

Ayyoub Bouaddi, 18, spent nine years in the youth ranks at AFC Creil before joining Lille's academy in 2021, the club with which he signed a contract extension to 2029, according to the French club. UEFA named him among the nominees for the 2025 Kopa Trophy, the annual award for the world's best player under 21, open to any nationality or league. Liverpool, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and PSG are among the clubs reported to have shown interest in the midfielder, according to Liverpool.com.

The road to Houston

Reuters confirmed that Canada was waiting for the winner of this tie in the round of 16, scheduled for July 4 at NRG Stadium in Houston. Canada reached that stage by beating South Africa 1-0 with a late goal from Stephen Eustáquio, according to Reuters.

FIFA's official bracket places the Netherlands-Morocco winner in the same half of the draw as Paraguay, who knocked out Germany on penalties 4-3 after a 1-1 draw, and the winner of France against Sweden. France, the reigning 2018 champions and 2022 finalists, sit in that same half, which makes them the toughest potential opponent the winner from Monterrey could face before a semi-final.

If Netherlands go through, their next opponents would be Canada in Houston, if Canada win that tie, the path to the semi-finals would run through the half of the draw where France are waiting. Koeman has Brobbey as his focal point, Frenkie de Jong and Ryan Gravenberch in midfield, and Cody Gakpo and Crysencio Summerville providing width, the same group that produced ten goals in the group stage.

For Morocco, Ouahbi warned before the match that an unbeaten group stage counts for nothing in the knockout rounds. "Tomorrow's match is different and requires different solutions. That is the mentality with which we will enter the game," he told reporters, as reported by Al Jazeera. With Hakimi, Bounou and seven other members of that 2022 squad, nine in total, still in the set-up, Morocco arrive at this round with the same core that has already proven it can compete with Europe's best.
