Kyle Shanahan Hurt in July 14 Crash, Limited at 49ers Camp

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was injured in a July 14 car accident near his Northern California home, and he will begin the team's 2026 training camp in a limited capacity, the franchise confirmed in an official statement on Saturday morning.

The 49ers said Shanahan suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the collision. Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster, alongside the team's coordinators, will assume head-coaching responsibilities while the 46-year-old recovers.

The Crash and What Was Reported

Shanahan was driving near his home when he collided with an SUV, according to reporting subsequently confirmed by Reuters. The reported injuries were extensive: a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, a severe concussion, and more than 40 stitches to his face. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he spent most of that day before being released.

The 49ers' official statement did not itemise the injuries, describing them only as non-life-threatening.

Palo Alto Police Lieutenant Nicholas Martinez, cited in those reports, said the other driver was not injured, drugs and alcohol were not involved, and both drivers cooperated with officers. No citations were issued. Martinez said authorities had not released details on fault or cause, consistent with standard procedures.

Shanahan has been recovering at home in the nearly two weeks since the crash. He is believed to be healing well, though doctors had not cleared him for all activities until his concussion symptoms resolved. No timetable for a full return has been given.

49ers' Plan While Shanahan Recovers

The 49ers' statement named Foerster the team's assistant head coach and offensive line coach as the figure leading the coaching group alongside coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer. The team's first practice of 2026 camp is scheduled for Sunday morning at the SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara.

General Manager John Lynch addressed the situation at a news conference on Saturday. Lynch said the organisation did not anticipate Shanahan missing Week 1 of the regular season, though he stopped short of guaranteeing availability. The 49ers open the 2026 campaign on September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne.

Shanahan informed his assistant coaches of the crash earlier in the week, and players had been gradually learning of the accident in the days leading up to camp.
