Chiefs Beat Cubs 9-3 as Fajardo Fans Career-High 10

Peoria Chiefs right-hander Yhoiker Fajardo struck out a career-high 10 batters across five innings at Four Winds Field on Friday night, July 17, as the Chiefs handed the South Bend Cubs a 9-3 defeat in the series opener of a three-game Midwest League set.

The result moved Peoria to 41-46 on the season. South Bend, returning from the All-Star break, fell to 49-35, still holding the stronger record in the division but unable to capitalize on a third-inning lead that briefly put them ahead 3-2.

Third-Inning Lead, Short-Lived

South Bend starter Ethan Flanagan had given up a run in each of the first two innings before his team answered in the third. Catcher Justin Stransky doubled with one out. Christian Olivo followed with a single, and Kane Kepley lifted a sacrifice fly to put the Cubs on the board. Josiah Hartshorn and Jose Escobar each added RBI singles into center, and suddenly South Bend led 3-2.

It was the last time the Cubs had the advantage all night.

Fajardo, 19, settled in after that stretch. Per the official MiLB game recap, the Cardinals prospect recorded 10 strikeouts across his five-inning outing and earned the win. He arrived in the Cardinals organization after the Boston Red Sox traded him, alongside Hunter Dobbins and Blake Aita, to St. Louis for Willson Contreras in December 2025, per his official MLB player page. Born October 3, 2006, in Villa de Cura, Venezuela, Fajardo is one of the younger arms in the High-A circuit at 6-foot-3.

The Fourth Inning

Peoria's six-run fourth was the night's defining sequence, unfolding entirely with two outs. What began as a routine inning for South Bend turned catastrophic.

Luis Rujano, brought on in relief of Flanagan, and fellow right-hander Grayson Moore watched nine consecutive Peoria batters reach base. Ian Petrutz leveled the score with a soft double. Anyelo Encarnación then drove in two with a single to give Peoria the lead for good at 5-3. Tai Peete and Jack Gurevitch added further RBI singles. Five of the six runs were charged to Rujano. In 20 minutes of game time, a 3-2 South Bend lead had become an 8-3 Peoria advantage.

The Cubs' pitching staff never recovered from that sequence.

Petrutz and the Peoria Offense

Petrutz was Peoria's most productive hitter across the full box score. His second-inning solo home run down the right-field line put the Chiefs up 2-0, and his fourth-inning double tied the game at 3-3 before Encarnación's single broke it open. The official MiLB game records identify it as a double, though the Peoria release on OurSportsCentral described it differently.

The official MiLB Game Center box score shows Petrutz finishing 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Josh Kross had set things in motion in the first inning with a triple off the top of the left-center wall, eventually scoring on a wild pitch.

Cameron Nickens added Peoria's ninth run in the eighth, singling in Michael Dattalo to close out the scoring.

South Bend's Bullpen Response

Mason McGwire provided South Bend's best pitching of the night after the damage was done. The right-hander retired eight consecutive Peoria batters after entering in relief, finishing with 4.0 innings of work and four strikeouts. Peoria's bullpen answered in kind the four relievers who followed Fajardo kept South Bend scoreless across the final four frames.

The Cubs finished with five hits and no errors. Peoria compiled 11 hits and committed one error across the nine-run performance.

Fajardo in the Cardinals System

Fajardo's career-high 10 strikeouts came in his first full season of High-A competition. His previous single-outing best was eight strikeouts, set May 13 at Beloit. He arrived in the Cardinals organization as part of the Contreras deal that also brought Dobbins and Aita to St. Louis a December 2025 transaction that immediately inserted Fajardo among the organization's top pitching prospects. Saturday Starter Matchup

The Chiefs and Cubs continue their three-game set at Four Winds Field on Saturday, July 18, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM ET. South Bend is expected to send Alfredo Romero to the mound. Jack Martinez is scheduled to start for Peoria.

South Bend's 49-35 record keeps them well positioned in the second half, but Friday's loss showed that Peoria despite a sub-.500 record carries enough pitching and offensive depth to win series against any club in the league. For Fajardo, 10 strikeouts in five innings at age 19 in High-A puts a concrete number on what the Cardinals acquired when they dealt a future Hall of Fame catcher last December.
