Orioles Beat Angels 3-1 in First Post-Rutschman Game

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-1 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Tuesday, Aug. 4, in their first game since trading Adley Rutschman and Jake Rogers to the Boston Red Sox the previous day.

Carlos Narváez, acquired in the Rutschman deal and activated before the game, started at catcher as left-hander Cade Povich worked six scoreless innings. Former Orioles right-hander Grayson Rodriguez allowed two runs across seven innings for Los Angeles in his first appearance at Camden Yards as an opponent.

Baltimore managed four hits against 11 for the Angels, but Pete Alonso's two-run single in the third inning and Tyler O'Neill's pinch-hit home run in the eighth supplied enough offense. The completed game record lists Povich as the winning pitcher after he allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out seven.

New catcher starts in Baltimore's first post-trade lineup

Narváez, 27, batted ninth and went 0-for-2, but his first assignment mattered more behind the plate. He caught Povich through six scoreless innings before Baltimore's bullpen limited Los Angeles to one run over the final three innings.

Rutschman, 28, would not have played in the opener even without the trade. The three-time All-Star was on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation and was expected to return in mid-August, according to the league's account of the deal.

Baltimore had therefore been planning around Rutschman's short-term absence. The trade made that catching change permanent and placed Narváez in charge of a pitching staff he had joined less than 24 hours earlier.

The deal sent Rutschman, Rogers and cash considerations to Boston. Baltimore received right-handers Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfielder Enddy Azocar, Narváez and a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Eyanson, 21, became Baltimore's No. 1 prospect and the No. 49 prospect in the league rankings after the trade. Witherspoon, 21, entered the Orioles' system at No. 6, while Azocar, 19, was ranked No. 7.

Rodriguez returns to Camden Yards as an Angels starter

Rodriguez, 26, brought another recent Orioles transaction into the same game. Baltimore sent him to Los Angeles on Nov. 19, 2025, in a one-for-one trade for outfielder Taylor Ward, as detailed in the original transaction record.

Ward, 32, was no longer with the Orioles by the time Rodriguez returned. Baltimore traded him to the Seattle Mariners on deadline day for right-handers Alex Hoppe, Harrison Kreiling and Brock Moore, according to the club's deadline transaction account.

The opener therefore joined two separate decisions made eight months apart. Narváez had arrived through the Rutschman trade the previous day. Rodriguez was facing the team that had dealt him for Ward, who had already been moved again.

Rodriguez held Baltimore to three hits and two runs over seven innings, with one walk and six strikeouts. He took the loss and moved to 3-4, while his season ERA fell from 7.98 to 7.24.

Povich, 26, improved to 2-1 after lowering his ERA from 5.12 to 3.91.

Baltimore had not settled Ward's future until the deadline. A pre-deadline examination of Phillies interest in Taylor Ward covered the choice between retaining his bat for a Wild Card pursuit and moving an outfielder approaching free agency.

By Tuesday night, Ward had gone to Seattle and Rodriguez was back at Camden Yards in another uniform. His performance showed the risk Baltimore accepted when it exchanged four years of pitcher control for one season of Ward, even though the Orioles won the first direct meeting after both players had been moved.

Orioles traded veterans while still near a Wild Card spot

Baltimore entered the opener at 54-58 and 2.5 games behind the third American League Wild Card position. The 3-1 win improved the Orioles to 55-58, but it did not reverse the longer-term decision made at the deadline.

Mike Elias, the president of baseball operations, said Baltimore needed an exceptional return before it would move Rutschman. Speaking after the deadline, Elias said in the official trade account: "It wasn't going to be any trade. It had to be something that we were overwhelmed by. And we were."

Rutschman's draft history made the move more significant. He was the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, Elias' first draft in charge of Baltimore's baseball operations, and became a central player in the club's return to contention.

The Orioles won 101 games and the AL East title in 2023, then went 91-71 and returned to the postseason as a Wild Card team in 2024. They finished 0-5 across those two playoff appearances.

Baltimore moved several established players from that group before this deadline. Dean Kremer went to Minnesota, Tyler Wells to Tampa Bay and Ward to Seattle, while Rutschman and Rogers were sent to an American League East rival.

Elias said the club would continue to play for a postseason position, though its record was not strong enough to make 2026 the sole focus. The opener illustrated both sides of that decision. Baltimore won a close game, but it did so with a catcher acquired for the player who had been the public face of its rebuild.

Orioles players processed the trade before taking the field

The Rutschman deal also reached the clubhouse before the lineup was posted. Gunnar Henderson, Colton Cowser, Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle had planned to meet at a movie theater on Monday, but Rutschman received the trade call before they saw the film.

Cowser said after batting practice at Camden Yards on Tuesday in the club's account of the players' reaction: "Just from a human side of it, obviously, it was tough."

Henderson, 25, was Baltimore's second-round selection in the same 2019 draft and reached the majors in 2022, the same season as Rutschman. The series opener began roughly 26 hours after the trade was announced, leaving little time between the decision and the next game.

Narváez is part of Baltimore's interim catching group until Samuel Basallo, 21, returns from a right shoulder injury. The first game still established a clear post-trade result: Narváez caught six scoreless innings and the Orioles won 3-1.

Four hits were enough behind Povich's six scoreless innings

Baltimore's offense produced only four hits, but two of them drove in all three runs. Alonso singled home Christian Franklin and Cowser in the third inning after Rodriguez had kept the Orioles hitless through the first two frames.

Los Angeles collected 11 hits but scored only once, on Vaughn Grissom's eighth-inning RBI single. O'Neill restored the two-run margin with a pinch-hit home run in the bottom half of the inning.

Narváez finished without a hit, yet his first Baltimore start was tied directly to the part of the game that decided the result. Povich and three relievers held the Angels to one run despite repeated traffic on the bases.

The series resumes Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6:35 p.m. ET at Camden Yards.
