Jake Rogers DFA'd as Tigers Activate Javier Báez

Detroit designated catcher Jake Rogers for assignment on July 28, 2026. A day later the club activated infielder Javier Báez from the 60-day injured list, according to the official Tigers transaction log. Four Moves in 48 Hours

The decision on Rogers did not happen in isolation. One day earlier, on July 27, Detroit placed outfielder Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list with left foot plantar fasciitis and recalled catcher Eduardo Valencia from Triple-A Toledo. By the time Báez was activated on July 28, Detroit had made four roster moves in 48 hours, a compressed sequence driven partly by injury and partly by the catching depth now available behind All-Star Dillon Dingler.

Valencia's return left Detroit carrying three catchers on an active roster that had no room for a third. The 26-year-old had debuted in the majors on July 9 and gone 5-for-12 with two home runs and a 1.379 OPS in his first 12 at-bats, according to his official MiLB profile. In 309 minor-league at-bats this season he had posted a .262 average with 17 home runs and a .347 on-base percentage, production that made a second demotion difficult to justify.

What a DFA Means for Rogers

The MLB glossary definition of designated for assignment is specific: DFA removes a player from the club's 40-man roster immediately. Within seven days from that date, the club must either trade the player, place him on outright waivers, or release him unconditionally. Rogers has not been released. His status remains unresolved until Detroit exercises one of those options.

A waiver claim would send Rogers to whichever team claims him at his existing salary. A trade remains possible within that same window. If he clears waivers unclaimed, Detroit could offer him an outright assignment to the minors, which Rogers, given his service time, could accept or refuse.

Rogers' 2026 Numbers

Rogers, 31, batted .161 with three home runs, nine RBI and a .567 OPS across 110 plate appearances in 2026, per Baseball-Reference's Detroit team statistics. Those figures fell below his career marks: in 1,070 major-league at-bats, his official MLB player page shows a .197 average, 46 home runs, 137 RBI and a .646 OPS.

His best offensive season came in 2023, when he hit a career-high 21 home runs. In 2024, playing 102 games, he batted .197 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI, and ranked fifth among MLB catchers with 13 Defensive Runs Saved, a credential that extended his usefulness during seasons when his bat was inconsistent. With Dingler established as the starter and Valencia delivering results immediately after his recall, Detroit had a roster surplus at the position.

Rogers' Path to Detroit

Rogers was drafted by the Houston Astros in the third round, 97th overall, out of Tulane in 2016. Houston traded him to Detroit on August 31, 2017, as part of the package that sent Justin Verlander to the Astros, a deal that also included outfielder Daz Cameron and pitcher Franklin Pérez. Rogers made his major-league debut on July 30, 2019, and went on to hold a catching role in Detroit across six MLB seasons, missing 2020 entirely and sitting out 2022 with injury.

Báez Returns Detroit at 50-57

Báez had been out since late April with a right ankle sprain, according to official reporting on his rehab assignment. He began a rehab stint with Single-A Lakeland on July 21 before moving to Triple-A Toledo on July 25. In 78 at-bats before the injury this season he had batted .256 with two home runs, six RBI and a .678 OPS.
