Braves-Marlins: Grant Holmes Faces Ryan Gusto

Grant Holmes, 30, started for the Atlanta Braves against Ryan Gusto, 27, and the Miami Marlins at Truist Park on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The official game page listed first pitch at 7:15 p.m. ET as Atlanta opened a three-game NL East series against a Miami team carrying a three-game winning streak.

The matchup connected two measurable August questions. Atlanta had rebuilt a division lead that narrowed sharply in June, while Holmes had reached 102 innings after an elbow injury made his 2026 availability uncertain. Miami was pursuing a Wild Card place, and Gusto faced an Atlanta order containing seven left-handed or switch hitters.

Braves and Marlins entered on winning streaks

Atlanta entered at 67-45 after five consecutive wins and held a 7.5-game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East. Miami arrived at 58-55 after three wins in a row, 9.5 games behind Atlanta and within two games of a National League Wild Card place, according to the August 4 standings.

The standings gave the series separate consequences for each club. Atlanta could protect the separation it had restored in the division. Miami had three games against the NL East leader while trying to close a smaller gap in the Wild Card race.

Atlanta had widened its lead since late June. A three-game sweep by the Padres left the Braves at 48-31 on June 24 and reduced their division advantage to 4.5 games.

The Braves then went 19-14 through August 4, reaching 67-45 and restoring the lead to 7.5 games. Holmes' start belonged to that 33-game stretch, during which Atlanta added enough wins to create three more games of separation from Philadelphia.

Holmes neared his 2025 innings total

Holmes entered the opener at 6-4 with a 3.88 ERA, 87 strikeouts and a 1.36 WHIP across 102 innings. His official player record lists 115 innings in 2025, leaving him 13 innings short of matching that total before the August 4 start.

The comparison gave the assignment a clear workload context. Holmes had already completed 88.7 percent of his 2025 innings total before taking the mound against Miami.

His previous season ended with right elbow inflammation. An MRI completed shortly after the 2025 All-Star break showed a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament and a partially torn flexor tendon.

Four doctors reviewed the MRI showing the torn flexor tendon. Two recommended surgery and two supported rest and rehabilitation. Holmes chose rehabilitation, and the February account of his recovery said surgery would have ruled him out for the 2026 season.

He reported to spring training without restrictions and remained in Atlanta's rotation into August. The Braves therefore reached this series with Holmes making a regular turn rather than recovering from an operation that would have removed him from the season.

Gusto brought a fuller Houston record

Gusto entered the game at 0-2 with a 5.31 ERA in the pregame listing. He joined Miami in the July 31, 2025, trade that sent Jesús Sánchez to Houston.

His official player biography gives a fuller account of his first major league season. Gusto made 24 appearances and 14 starts for Houston, going 7-4 with a 4.92 ERA overall. In his 14 starts, he went 6-4 with a 5.45 ERA across 66 innings.

After the trade, he made three starts for Miami and went 0-3 with a 9.77 ERA. A right shoulder impingement placed him on the injured list at the end of August and caused him to miss the remainder of the 2025 season.

That history made the Atlanta assignment a continuation of a mixed starting and relief career rather than a sudden move into unfamiliar work. His immediate problem was specific: six of the first seven Braves hitters batted left-handed or switch against the right-hander.

Braves used seven left-handed or switch hitters

The confirmed Atlanta lineup began with Drake Baldwin, Ronald Acuña Jr., Matt Olson, Michael Harris II and Ozzie Albies. Mike Yastrzemski, Dominic Smith, Austin Riley and Jim Jarvis completed the order.

Seven of the nine hitters were left-handed or switch hitters. Baldwin, Olson, Harris, Albies, Yastrzemski and Smith gave Gusto six such matchups within the first seven places.

Baldwin led off, Acuña hit second, and Olson remained third. Harris and Albies followed before Yastrzemski and Smith added two more left-handed bats later in the order.

Miami used Kyle Stowers, Griffin Conine, Otto Lopez, Owen Caissie, Heriberto Hernández, Jakob Marsee, Leo Jiménez, Joe Mack and Javier Sanoja. Five of Miami's nine hitters batted from the left side against Holmes.

Lopez stayed in the third spot, the same position he occupied in a recent Mets-Marlins lineup, while Stowers moved from the middle of the order to the leadoff spot.

Four of Miami's five left-handed hitters appeared in the first six places. Atlanta placed six left-handed or switch hitters in its first seven, giving Gusto the heavier concentration of opposite-handed matchups at the top of the order.

Pérez and Elder were listed for Wednesday

The series continued at Truist Park on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, with Eury Pérez listed against Bryce Elder at 7:15 p.m. ET. The probable pitchers page listed Pérez at 5-8 with a 3.44 ERA and Elder at 7-6 with a 3.84 ERA.

Thursday's finale was also scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET. Atlanta listed Martín Pérez, a left-hander with a 7-6 record and 3.24 ERA, while Miami's starter remained unconfirmed at the time of publication.

That left the series with one known follow-up and one unresolved pitching assignment. Pérez and Elder were set for Wednesday, while Miami had not named the pitcher scheduled to oppose Martín Pérez in the finale.
