Mexico ended 40 years without a World Cup knockout win, beating Ecuador 2-0 at the Azteca thanks to Quiñones and Jiménez goals on June 30.
Julián Quiñones scored in the 22nd minute and Raúl Jiménez added a second nine minutes later as Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 at Estadio Azteca on June 30, ending a 40-year wait for a knockout-stage victory at the tournament.
Mexico's First Knockout Win Since the 1986 Azteca
Mexico's last World Cup knockout win before Tuesday came in the same stadium: a 2-0 defeat of Bulgaria at the 1986 tournament, also held in Mexico City. Forty years on, the Azteca delivered the same scoreline against a South American opponent, and it did so in front of a crowd reported by Reuters as exceeding 80,000.
The match started an hour later than scheduled after a thunderstorm and lightning risk around the stadium forced officials to delay kickoff, according to Reuters. Mexico pressed from the opening whistle and broke the deadlock when Quiñones received the ball from Roberto Alvarado, drove into the box and unleashed a shot past goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez in the top corner. The forward, who wears No. 16 for El Tri, had already scored twice in the group stage this was his third of the tournament.
Nine minutes later, Jiménez doubled the lead. He pounced on a poor pass from Ecuador's Joel Ordóñez, exchanged a combination with Quiñones, and fired into the corner. According to Yahoo Sports, Jiménez, 35, became the first player in his 30s to score a knockout-round goal for Mexico.
Ecuador were not without threat. John Yeboah clipped the outside of the near post in the first half and, after the break, Raúl Rangel produced a fine save to deny Yeboah again, as confirmed by Al Jazeera's match report. Ecuador substitute Kevin Rodríguez also poked wide with 15 minutes remaining. Mexico controlled the match and never allowed Ecuador back into it, but the visitors created enough to prevent any claim that they were entirely passive.
Ecuador defender Piero Hincapié was dismissed in the 95th minute following a confrontational exchange with Santiago Giménez under a tournament interpretation relating to players covering their mouths during such incidents, as confirmed by the Associated Press.
Mexico's Path Through Group A
Mexico entered the knockout round having won every group-stage match without conceding. They opened on June 11 with a 2-0 victory over South Africa, followed by a 1-0 defeat of Korea Republic, before completing the group with a 3-0 win over Czechia on June 24. Gilberto Mora: 17 Years, 259 Days, Started a Knockout Match
The most-noted statistical detail from Tuesday's starting lineup was Gilberto Mora's age. At 17 years and 259 days, Mora became the second-youngest player ever to start a men's World Cup knockout match behind Brazil's Pelé, who was 17 years and 239 days in 1958, as FOX Sports confirmed. Mora was replaced by Brian Gutiérrez in the 58th minute, per the FOX Sports box score, having hit the target twice and created problems for Ecuador throughout the opening hour.
