Maria had suffered from the opposite problem earlier in the week Ostapenko herself had pushed through heat stroke in the quarterfinals but on Friday it was the Latvian who could not continue. "It's never nice to end like this but I'm happy with my week for the moment, and I'm happy to be in the final," Maria said. The LTA's official tournament report confirmed both retirements.

Keys Chasing a Third Eastbourne Title

Keys won her first WTA singles title at Eastbourne in 2014, defeating Angelique Kerber in the final. She returned nine years later to claim the title again in 2023, beating Daria Kasatkina. The 31-year-old from Rock Island, Illinois added her first Grand Slam title at the 2025 Australian Open, defeating Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in Melbourne. Who Is Tatjana Maria

Maria, 38, is a German professional known for an unorthodox slice-heavy game and a one-handed backhand that generates angles most players on the WTA Tour cannot replicate. She entered Eastbourne ranked No. 112, having never previously won a main-draw match at the tournament.

Reaching the Eastbourne final at 38, Reuters reported, made her the oldest women's finalist in the tournament's history. Her run included wins over No. 1 seed Jasmine Paolini, Anastasia Zakharova, Tereza Valentova and Jelena Ostapenko two of those four opponents were seeds. She was ranked 85 places below Keys entering the final.
