Cobolli vs Khachanov: Grass Complicates the Ranking Gap

Flavio Cobolli, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 10 nearly four weeks earlier, faced 19th seed Karen Khachanov in the third round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships on No. 2 Court at the All England Club on Saturday, 4 July with fifth seed Alex de Minaur already confirmed as the fourth-round opponent for whoever advances.

Cobolli's rise gathered speed in Paris

Cobolli turned 24 in May. He turned professional in 2020 and recorded his first tour-level win in Parma in 2021 against Marcos Giron. Five years later, he is in the Wimbledon third round as a seeded player, carrying the momentum of three ATP titles and a first Grand Slam final.

Cobolli's season changed at Roland Garros, where he reached his first Grand Slam final. On 7 June he lost to Alexander Zverev in five sets 6–1, 4–6, 6–4, 6–7(5), 6–1 in the championship match, according to the official Roland-Garros match report. The result moved him into the ATP Top 10 for the first time. His official ATP profile confirms the ranking. His three ATP titles through the start of Wimbledon Bucharest 2025, Hamburg 2025, and Acapulco in March 2026 had already marked him as a player capable of winning on clay and hard courts. His results on clay and hard courts were established Wimbledon still had to show whether the same progress would hold on grass.

His Wimbledon campaign had already produced two four-set victories and a career milestone. The 7–6(4), 3–6, 7–6(3), 6–1 second-round victory over Australia's James Duckworth on 2 July was, per the ATP's official milestone report, his 100th tour-level win. "Being here and playing with a great attitude is the goal that I had with the team," Cobolli said after that match. "I fought every point that I did. That helped to be here and happy to reach the third round." His previous best at Wimbledon was a quarter-final run in 2025.

Khachanov brings the quieter grass-court advantage

Karen Khachanov is 30, Russian-born, ranked No. 22 but seeded No. 19 at this event, per the ATP's Wimbledon seedings list. His career-high ranking of No. 8 was reached earlier in his career. His Grand Slam ceiling is established: semi-finals at the 2022 US Open and 2023 Australian Open. His best results at Wimbledon are quarter-finals, reached in both 2021 and 2025.

He arrived in the third round having won six of the seven sets played across his first two matches. He beat Billy Harris 6–3, 5–7, 6–3, 6–3 in round one, as recorded in Wimbledon's Day 2 results. He then defeated Yannick Hanfmann 6–3, 6–4, 6–4 in round two without dropping serve, a performance confirmed in the Day 4 results. At 1.98 metres, Khachanov can create a steep serving angle, while his flat, powerful groundstrokes travel quickly through a grass court. He had spent noticeably less time on court heading into the third round than his opponent.

Their only meeting offers limited guidance

Before this match, Cobolli and Khachanov had met exactly once. Khachanov won that encounter 7–5, 6–4 in Madrid in April 2024, on clay, according to the ATP's official report from that event. Their 2026 Wimbledon meeting was therefore their first on grass as professionals.

Khachanov's 1–0 lead matters because he has solved Cobolli once. It matters less because that victory came on clay in 2024, before Cobolli entered the Top 20. The Wimbledon surface tests a different set of strengths, and Cobolli has served more effectively in his first two matches here than his earlier grass-court results suggested he would, developing his movement and return game during his 2025 quarter-final run at this same tournament.

De Minaur is already waiting

The winner faces fifth seed Alex de Minaur in round four. De Minaur defeated Zachary Svajda 6–2, 5–7, 6–2, 6–4 earlier on Day 6, per the official Wimbledon Day 6 schedule and results. The Australian is a grass specialist whose movement and defensive game make him one of the most difficult fourth-round opponents in the bracket.

Reaching the last 16 would give Cobolli deep runs at consecutive Grand Slams. For Khachanov, it would preserve a chance to match or improve on his two Wimbledon quarter-finals.

This year's Championships carry a record total prize fund of £64.2 million, as announced in the official Wimbledon prize-money release. Cobolli's record on grass

From his first tour-level win in Parma in 2021 to the Duckworth match on 2 July, Cobolli built his record through clay-court titles in Bucharest and Hamburg, a hard-court title in Acapulco, and a first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros. That showed his progress was no longer confined to clay or hard courts.

His four Top-10 wins through the start of Wimbledon all listed in the ATP milestone report place him among the most improved Italian players on the ATP circuit in 2026. The first came against Holger Rune in Madrid in 2025.

Khachanov has won seven ATP titles across his career, per his official ATP profile. He has won more titles and has more experience in the later rounds of major tournaments. The difference between the ninth and 19th seeds reflects Cobolli's stronger recent results, yet Khachanov's grass-court record suggests that his seeding may understate the threat he poses on this surface.

Cobolli and Khachanov were scheduled second on No. 2 Court on an order of play beginning at 11.00am, per the official Day 6 order of play. The fourth round, where the winner of this match would next appear, is scheduled for 5–6 July.
