USA Still In Group D Winners Face Bosnia July 1
The US is still in the World Cup. Despite losing 3-2 to Türkiye on June 25, the USMNT won Group D and faces Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 in Santa Clara.

The United States is not out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The USMNT lost 3-2 to Türkiye at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California on June 25, but had already clinched first place in Group D before kickoff and advanced to the Round of 32 with six points the most the team has ever earned in a World Cup group stage.
No Bracket Consequence From the Türkiye Loss
Türkiye won the match. Substitute Kaan Ayhan slid in at the far post with his right boot at 90+8 to give a side that had already been eliminated a 3-2 scoreline. The United States had locked up Group D on June 20, the day after beating Australia 2-0 in Seattle, so the defeat changed nothing in the bracket.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino rang nine changes from the Australia starting lineup a U.S. World Cup record for rotations between matches. Weston McKennie and Ricardo Pepi were the only holdovers. Several players were carrying yellow cards and needed to be available for the knockout round.
The final Group D table:

How the Match Unfolded
Auston Trusty opened the scoring after 134 seconds the second-fastest goal the U.S. has ever scored at a World Cup, according to U.S. Soccer. It was his first international goal. Sebastian Berhalter delivered the corner that led to it, then equalised himself in the 49th minute, making him the first American on record since 1966 to score and assist in the same World Cup match.
Arda Güler brought Türkiye level in the 10th minute the team's first tournament goal after a 2-0 loss to Australia and a 1-0 loss to Paraguay in its opening two fixtures. Türkiye went 2-1 ahead in the 31st minute, though U.S. Soccer credits Orkun Kökçü with the goal while Reuters attributes the same strike to Barış Alper Yılmaz. The attribution is unresolved, this article follows the federation's official scoring summary pending any FIFA match-centre correction.
The United States out-shot Türkiye 18 to 9 and put seven efforts on target against three. Türkiye's goalkeeper made five saves. With the score at 2-2, Ayhan came off the bench in the 88th minute and finished from close range in stoppage time to give Türkiye the win. USA vs Bosnia and Herzegovina July 1 in Santa Clara
The United States will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium (Levi's Stadium) in Santa Clara, California. Fans in India can watch from 5:30 a.m. IST on Thursday, July 2.
July 1 is the fourth time the teams have met and their first in official competition. The three previous friendlies produced two U.S. wins and one draw, per U.S. Soccer's Round of 32 announcement.
Under the expanded 48-team format introduced for 2026, the group stage ran as a round-robin across 12 groups. The Round of 32 is where that ends. From here every match is single elimination the winner advances, the loser exits. Per FIFA's official format page, the 2026 final is scheduled for July 19.
Injury Watch and Group-Stage Record
Christian Pulisic played the first half of the tournament opener against Paraguay before coming off, then missed the Australia match due to a calf injury. He returned as a 58th-minute substitute against Türkiye, replacing Tim Weah. No official starting decision for the Bosnia match had been announced at the time of publication.
Auston Trusty left the Türkiye match late on a stretcher. Reuters reported an apparent hamstring issue but no official diagnosis had been confirmed. His availability for July 1 is uncertain.
The USMNT finished the group stage having scored eight goals in three matches a team record for a single World Cup, according to U.S. Soccer. Six points is the highest group-stage total the U.S. has ever accumulated. The team also won its group in 1930 and 2010, but its points tally in both those campaigns was lower under the format in use at the time.
The outcome of the Bosnia match on July 1, not the Türkiye result, is what determines whether the U.S. continues.
