MLB All-Star Game 2026: AL and NL Meet in Philadelphia

The 96th MLB All-Star Game took place on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, the first time the Midsummer Classic has been played at the Phillies' home ballpark, and the fifth time Philadelphia has hosted the event in baseball history.

Citizens Bank Park's First All-Star Night

Citizens Bank Park opened in 2004. It has hosted playoff baseball, a World Series, and decades of Philadelphia summer nights. What it had never seen, until now, is an All-Star Game.

Philadelphia was awarded the game back in April 2019, according to MLB's official All-Star event hub. That seven-year window gave the Phillies organization time to build toward a night that opened with Patti LaBelle singing the national anthem and the field stocked with the best players in the sport.

The Phillies sent six representatives to the game: Kyle Schwarber, Brandon Marsh, Bryce Harper, Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, and Jhoan Duran. Six is the most by any host club since the Dodgers also placed six players at the 2022 edition, per the official 2026 All-Star roster breakdown.

The Starting Pitchers

Cristopher Sánchez started for the National League at his home ballpark, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to start an All-Star Game since Roy Halladay in 2011, and the seventh Phillies pitcher to do so overall. On the other side, Blue Jays right-hander Dylan Cease started for the American League, becoming only the third Toronto pitcher to earn that honor after Halladay himself in 2009 and Dave Stieb before him, according to MLB's FAQ page for the game.

Sánchez addressed what pitching at Citizens Bank Park in an All-Star Game meant to him. "This feels really special," he told reporters through an interpreter on Monday. "Really exciting. Even moreso being here at home."

Both starters connect through the same pitcher: Halladay started for the Phillies at the 2011 game, and for the Blue Jays at the 2009 edition. Neither Sánchez nor Cease set out to recreate that symmetry, it arrived on its own.

The Lineups

The AL sent out Mike Trout, Yordan Alvarez, Shea Langeliers, Junior Caminero, Bobby Witt Jr., Cody Bellinger, Ben Rice, Riley Greene, and Ernie Clement. The NL countered with Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto, Freddie Freeman, CJ Abrams, Max Muncy, Ozzie Albies, Brandon Marsh, Andy Pages, and Drake Baldwin, per the official starting lineup confirmed by MLB.

Several prominent names were absent. Shohei Ohtani withdrew to manage a knee injury ahead of the second half, with Schwarber slotting in as NL DH. Aaron Judge missed the game with a rib fracture sustained in early June, opening the door for Bellinger to join the AL starting group. Jacob Misiorowski was scratched due to fatigue after missing a recent start. Paul Skenes was unavailable, having pitched Sunday.

Trout, at 34, was making his 12th All-Star appearance, the most of any player on either roster in 2026, per MLB's official event notes. The game was being played roughly 40 miles from his hometown of Millville, New Jersey, and he led off for the AL in front of a crowd that has treated him as a local for his entire career.

Junior Caminero

Before the game, Junior Caminero stood out as one of the more compelling names on the AL side. The 23-year-old Tampa Bay Rays third baseman entered All-Star Week with 28 home runs and a slash line of .279/.372/.555, carrying some of the sharpest power numbers in baseball at that point in the season. His production had kept him near the front of AL MVP discussions since well before the break.

Earlier in the week, Caminero had broken a record set by Ken Griffey Jr., homering in six consecutive games, the youngest player to do so in MLB history. His night ended early when he was hit by a Riley O'Brien pitch and exited for X-rays.

The Rays placed five players in the game overall: Caminero, along with pitchers Bryan Baker, Nick Martinez, and Drew Rasmussen, and designated hitter Yandy Díaz, per the team-by-team All-Star breakdown.

The Managers

Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers managed the National League, his fifth time in that role, earned through back-to-back World Series titles. John Schneider of the Toronto Blue Jays oversaw the American League after the Blue Jays held the AL pennant the previous year, according to MLB's official FAQ. Schneider was managing in the Midsummer Classic for the first time.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol and Phillies interim skipper Don Mattingly served as honorary coaches on the NL staff alongside Roberts.

Home-Field Advantage and the Exhibition

Since 2017, the All-Star Game has carried no bearing on World Series home-field advantage. That distinction now goes to whichever pennant winner carries the better regular-season record, as confirmed by MLB's official All-Star FAQ.

All-Star Week gave Philadelphia more than the game itself. The 2026 MLB All-Star Futures Game aired Sunday, July 12, on NBC and Peacock from the same ballpark, featuring 38 of baseball's Top 100 prospects. The T-Mobile Home Run Derby followed Monday at 8 p.m. ET, with Jordan Walker winning for the NL, before the main event closed the week.

The Tiebreaker Rule

If the game is tied after nine innings, teams go to a home run swing-off rather than extra innings. Three hitters per side each take three swings, and the team with the most home runs wins. The NL held the title from last year's game, which ended 7-6 after a 6-6 regulation tie, with Kyle Schwarber going three-for-three in the swing-off to win it and take the 2025 All-Star Game MVP award, per MLB's All-Star history page.

For 2026, the confirmed swing-off participants were Randy Arozarena, Willson Contreras, and Munetaka Murakami for the AL, Hunter Goodman, Jordan Walker, and James Wood for the NL, per the official tiebreaker list.

Two Legends Acknowledged

Justin Verlander, a three-time Cy Young winner now with the Detroit Tigers at age 43, was added to the AL roster by Commissioner Rob Manfred as a "Legend Pick." Verlander was not active for the game due to hip and hamstring injuries, but attended the festivities in Philadelphia. He also announced his retirement this season, making the selection his 10th and final All-Star appearance, per MLB's own feature on the decision.

On the NL side, Manfred selected Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper as the league's Legend Pick. Harper, making his ninth All-Star appearance, was hitting .274 with 20 home runs entering the break and was playing in the game in his own home stadium.

Michael Wacha of the Royals also appeared, returning to the All-Star roster for the first time since 2015, an 11-year gap that made him one of only three players in history to wait that long between All-Star selections, per an MLB feature marking the occasion.

Six Phillies, Seven Years in the Making

Philadelphia secured the hosting rights in April 2019. What arrived on July 14 was the result of that full runway six Phillies representatives, a starting pitcher taking the mound in his own ballpark, and two franchise players, Sánchez and Harper, in the same game, at the same venue, for the same crowd that watches them every fifth day and on every home stand.
