Max Fried Returns Early for Yankees in Pirates Doubleheader

Max Fried was activated from the injured list Wednesday and is set to start Game 2 of the New York Yankees' day-night doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Yankee Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET a return pushed forward by Tuesday night's rainout that gives the Yankees a rotation combination they have spent the season waiting to deploy.

How a Rainout Reshuffled the Timetable

Tuesday's game at Yankee Stadium was wiped out by rain and rescheduled as a separate-admission doubleheader on Wednesday. The postponement prompted the Yankees to scrap a planned second rehab outing for Fried at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and bring him straight back to the major league roster.

Manager Aaron Boone told the Talkin' Yanks podcast on Tuesday that Fried was set to throw roughly 60 pitches in that second rehab start before rejoining the club during New York's next road series in Chicago. The rainout changed the plan. With a doubleheader requiring two starters and Gerrit Cole slotted for the 1:05 p.m. ET opener against Mitch Keller, the Yankees moved Fried's timeline forward rather than search for a fill-in.

Wednesday marks the first time Cole and Fried have been active teammates pitching on the same day this season Cole having spent the entirety of 2025 sidelined recovering from Tommy John surgery, and Fried missing time this season with a left elbow bone bruise.

Three Innings in Moosic, Then the Bronx

Fried last pitched in a regular-season game on May 13, against Baltimore. He was placed on the 15-day injured list days later with a bone bruise in his left elbow. Imaging showed the ligament was intact and Fried did not require surgery, which moved his recovery ahead of worst-case projections.

He made one rehab appearance the previous Friday with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre three innings, five hits, two runs, 52 pitches, 32 strikes, three strikeouts, and no walks. The original plan called for a second outing of roughly 60 pitches before his big-league return. Wednesday's doubleheader moved that plan to a similar pitch-count target Boone confirmed Fried will be held to around 60 pitches in Game 2.

Before the injury, Fried had been one of the more effective starters in the American League. He carried a 4-3 record and a 3.21 ERA across 10 starts and 61⅔ innings, with opponents hitting just .199 against him and 50 strikeouts against 19 walks. Those numbers track with the form that defined his first Yankees season in 2025, when he went 19-5 with a 2.86 ERA across 32 starts and finished fourth in AL Cy Young voting.

Cole, Fried, and the Rotation New York Signed Up For

Cole and Fried appearing in the same rotation on the same day is less a milestone than a long-delayed arrival. The Yankees signed Fried in December 2024 to an eight-year, $218 million contract with the explicit intention of pairing him alongside Cole as a dual anchor at the top of the staff.

Cole's elbow complicated that plan first. He underwent Tommy John surgery in early 2025 and missed the entire season. He returned for his 2026 debut on May 22 against Tampa Bay, throwing six scoreless innings with his fastball touching 98.6 mph. Fried, meanwhile, handled the 2025 rotation himself 19-5, 2.86 ERA before his elbow forced him to the IL this May.

Cole entered Wednesday at 3-5 with a 3.93 ERA since his return. His Game 1 counterpart is Pittsburgh right-hander Mitch Keller, who carries a 6-7 record and 5.14 ERA. Bubba Chandler (3-8, 4.77 ERA) draws the Game 2 assignment opposite Fried for the Pirates.

The Yankees also remain without starter Carlos Rodón, sidelined with left elbow inflammation, making Wednesday's double-barreled return all the more significant for New York's rotation depth.

Two Games Back, With Philadelphia Next

New York entered Wednesday's doubleheader at 56-44, sitting 2.0 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East the gap widened by half a game after Tampa Bay's win over Toronto on Tuesday while the Yankees sat idle. The Pirates, at 52-49, arrived in the Bronx tied for the final NL wild-card spot.

The Yankees' next scheduled series after Wednesday's twin bill is a four-game road trip to Philadelphia starting July 24. Having Fried reintegrated before that series even on a limited pitch count is why the club moved his return forward rather than waiting another week. New York has posted a 20-21 record since Aaron Judge last played on May 31, a stretch that illustrates what the roster has been absorbing through the injury period.

Rain-postponed doubleheaders have shaped several AL East storylines this month. Earlier in July, the Rays vs. Red Sox split doubleheader on July 17 produced its own rotation reshuffles, a reminder of how a single postponement can ripple through a team's pitching plan for days.

A Three-Time All-Star Returns on a Pitch Limit

The 32-year-old left-hander enters this start as a three-time All-Star. His 19-5 record and 2.86 ERA in his first Yankees season earned him fourth place in AL Cy Young voting a finish that narrowly missed broader recognition.

He signed with New York after the 2024 season as the top left-handed starter on the free-agent market. Among his career strengths: a walk rate that has consistently placed among the lowest for qualified starters, and a .199 opponents' batting average through 10 starts in 2026. Whether that sub-.200 mark has held across multiple full seasons requires verification against career splits.

Wednesday's return, capped at around 60 pitches against Pittsburgh's lineup, is a first step back rather than a full reintegration. Boone's plan, as stated before the doubleheader was even scheduled, was always to bring Fried back at around this workload. The rainout only changed the venue.
