England captain Harry Brook won the toss at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on Thursday and chose to bowl first against India in the second ODI of the three-match Metro Bank series, with India arriving at the Welsh venue already holding a 1-0 lead after their six-wicket win at Edgbaston two days earlier.

Brook Bowls First India's Top Order Faces the Early Test

Brook's decision to field first gives India's top order the first challenge of the afternoon. India open with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, the same pair that took guard at Edgbaston, and with a 1-0 series lead already in hand, a settled batting performance at Cardiff could put the series beyond England's reach before a ball is bowled at Lord's on Sunday.

The match started at 1:00 PM local time (12:00 PM GMT / 5:30 PM IST). Brook cited the healthy grass cover on the pitch and the expectation of early seam movement and swing as reasons for his decision to bowl. That logic is easy to understand at Sophia Gardens but at Edgbaston, where England chose to bat first and still lost to a chase completed with 28 balls to spare, their bowlers found the pitch offering more assistance than expected and still could not defend 258. Brook told reporters after that loss that his side were "at least ten overs light on pace stocks" on an unexpectedly seaming surface.

India's One Enforced Change

India are without KL Rahul, ruled out of the second match through illness. Ishan Kishan steps in behind the stumps, the only change India made from their Edgbaston XI.

Rahul had been listed as wicketkeeper in India's expected line-up before the match. His absence removes a batter who formed part of India's original squad balance at number six, with Kishan a like-for-like wicketkeeper replacement stepping directly into that role.

The confirmed India playing XI at Cardiff is: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (c), Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Gurnoor Brar, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna.

Gill's fitness was a pre-match question heading into Cardiff. He retired hurt after scoring 80 in the Edgbaston opener the Cricinfo match report confirmed the cause was cramps, and Gill said on BBC's Test Match Special that he expected to be fit for Cardiff. His appearance in the opening batting slot at Sophia Gardens confirmed he was fit enough to play.

England's Two Changes

England brought in Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood, replacing Josh Tongue and Liam Dawson. Brook confirmed the two changes at the toss, explaining that the Cardiff pitch's dimensions and conditions called for a different bowling approach than Edgbaston.

Dawson's omission requires context. He scored 68 off 83 balls at number eight at Edgbaston the second-highest score for England in a total of 258, behind Joe Root's unbeaten 76 yet England still chose to alter their bowling shape for Cardiff. Dawson's inclusion at Edgbaston was later described in the Cricinfo match preview as a misread of conditions, the Cardiff ground's shorter straight boundaries and deeper square pockets make a pitch-hitting option more useful than a slow left-arm spinner. Atkinson's inclusion adds a right-arm pace angle, Mahmood gives Brook a swing option at a venue where seam conditions can differ from Edgbaston's flatter surface.

What Happened at Edgbaston

The first ODI, played on 14 July, ended with India chasing down England's 258 and finishing at 262/4 in 45.2 overs. Reuters confirmed the six-wicket win with 28 balls remaining.

England's innings at Birmingham contained a sharp middle-order collapse. Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell took the opening stand to 61 without loss before India's bowlers dismantled the middle order, reducing England from 61/0 to 80/5 in what Brook later described as losing five for 20. The total reached 258 largely through Joe Root's unbeaten 76 and Dawson's 68, a partnership of 121 that rescued a score that had looked far lower after that collapse.

India's reply was built on Gill's 80 at the top, Axar Patel's 57 and Washington Sundar's unbeaten 52, the two adding an unconquered 102 after India had slipped to 160/4. Axar also took four wickets with the ball, finishing with figures of 4-62, making him the decisive performer in both innings. Rohit Sharma made 11 and Virat Kohli 5, both departing cheaply which gives England's bowlers a specific target: remove the openers early and the Indian middle order has already shown it carries vulnerability.

Series Position: What Cardiff Decides

India lead 1-0 in a three-match series. A second straight victory in Cardiff seals the series before the Lord's finale on 19 July. A win for England draws level and sets up a deciding match at Lord's.

Both squads are preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. For England, losing this series 0-2 at home would extend a run of difficult 50-over results dating back to their Champions Trophy exit in 2025. For India, sealing the series in Cardiff would mean their ODI form from Edgbaston has translated across grounds and conditions.

According to the ICC's official match page, this is part of an active bilateral series between the two sides.

Sophia Gardens has hosted men's ODIs since 1999 and has completed 33 of them. Chasing sides have won 21 of those matches, with teams batting first winning eight. The average first-innings score at the ground is 223, teams have generally aimed for 270-280 to set a competitive target. Its River Taff End and Cathedral Road End offer seam movement early, with the shorter straight boundaries making the ground particularly punishing for sides relying on traditional mid-pace spinners which is a direct factor in England's selection of Mahmood over Dawson.

If the series reaches a deciding match, the third ODI is scheduled for Lord's, London, on 19 July, confirmed on the ECB's official fixtures page.

England need a long, disciplined batting innings at Cardiff and a middle order that avoids the kind of five-wicket collapse that cost them at Edgbaston. India need only build on what they showed in Birmingham.
