Mookie Betts Drops to Fifth as Dodgers Open Series at Phillies

Dave Roberts moved Mookie Betts from cleanup to fifth in Monday's series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, one spot down the order after a hitless doubleheader in New York and with the Dodgers entering Philadelphia on back-to-back days for the first time this season.

Dodgers' Lineup Construction Against Sánchez

The full Dodgers order placed Shohei Ohtani at designated hitter in the leadoff spot, followed by Andy Pages in centre field, Tommy Edman at third base, Freddie Freeman at first, and Betts in the fifth spot at shortstop. Miguel Rojas, Teoscar Hernández, Alex Call, and Dalton Rushing filled the bottom four spots, with right-hander Emmet Sheehan taking the mound.

The adjustments were partly driven by fatigue after a back-to-back schedule. Max Muncy received a rest day and Kyle Tucker sat against the left-handed starter Cristopher Sánchez, a matchup the Dodgers have historically approached with a right-hand-tilted lineup. Edman slid up to third base to cover the gap, and Freeman dropped one spot from third to fourth as a result, pulling Betts along with him from fourth to fifth. Both Muncy's and Tucker's absences from the starting nine were confirmed in the official lineup card.

Betts's Numbers in 2026

The context matters. Betts entered Monday batting .226 with 56 hits, 11 home runs, 31 RBI, and an OPS of .689 across 63 games, well below his career averages of .288 batting average and .874 OPS across 13 MLB seasons. He also carries 302 career home runs and 1,823 hits.

Roberts has addressed the approach directly when Betts struggles at the plate. In late May, after a similar lineup adjustment, the manager said moving Betts lower gave the shortstop a different look and reduced the weight of taking at-bats near the top of the order while working through lean stretches. Betts homered twice on that occasion.

The July lineup move follows that same logic. Betts was hitless through both games of Sunday's doubleheader in New York, and Roberts opted against keeping him in the four-hole for a series opener against a left-hander with the best home ERA in the National League.

Sheehan Against the NL's Stingiest Home Starter

Emmet Sheehan entered the game with a 4-6 record, a 4.81 ERA, and 93 strikeouts, his first outing since the All-Star break. Facing him was Cristopher Sánchez, the Phillies' left-handed starter carrying an 11-4 record and a 2.62 ERA with 144 strikeouts across 20 starts.

Sánchez is carrying a live Cy Young case into the second half. He finished runner-up to Paul Skenes in last season's National League vote and has been even harder to score against in 2026, holding a 0.86 ERA and a .188 opponent batting average in home starts at Citizens Bank Park. The matchup favoured Philadelphia on paper before first pitch.

The Dodgers entered the series at 63-37. The Phillies sat at 55-45, second in the NL East and within striking distance of the division lead.

First Meeting Since October

The series carries recent playoff history. Los Angeles defeated Philadelphia three games to one in the 2025 National League Division Series, before going on to win the World Series over Toronto in seven games. The two clubs met previously in the regular season in May, the Dodgers hosted the Phillies at Dodger Stadium from May 29-31, making Monday's opener the first in Philadelphia since that postseason run.

Shohei Ohtani, who leads off for the Dodgers and hit a three-run homer 432 feet in a 9-4 win over the Athletics in late June, remains the lineup's anchor regardless of which hitters surround him. Betts' move to the fifth spot reshapes the order, it does not change the Dodgers' run-scoring capacity, which ranks among the best in the National League.

Philadelphia's Lineup

Philadelphia countered with Trea Turner at shortstop and leadoff, Kyle Schwarber as designated hitter, Bryce Harper at first base, Alec Bohm at third, Brandon Marsh in left field, Bryson Stott at second, J.T. Realmuto behind the plate, Gabriel Rincones Jr. in right field, and Justin Crawford in centre.

First pitch was scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park.

A Lineup Decision, Not a Demotion

Roberts has been clear enough that Betts batting fifth is a lineup adjustment rather than a verdict. "With hitting, it's so kind of nuanced that there's not always one cue that gets a hitter back to feeling normal," Roberts said previously when explaining moves involving Betts. "There's a lot of internal kind of searching that goes on with the mechanics."

The real test is whether Sánchez, a left-hander with sharp command and a track record against Ohtani, Freeman, and Muncy specifically, can hold a lineup with threats beyond the No. 5 spot. Roberts confirmed the Dodgers are "really excited" about the organization's depth heading into the stretch run, after completing a trade ahead of the series opener, acquiring right-handed reliever Seth Halvorsen from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor league pitcher Nick Frasso and outfield prospect Landyn Vidourek.
