SSI Recipients Get No August Check, Here's Why
The August 2026 SSI payment is scheduled for July 31 because Aug. 1 falls on a Saturday. No separate SSI deposit lands in August, here's what the SSA payment calendar shows and when to expect the next payment.

The Social Security Administration has scheduled the August 2026 Supplemental Security Income payment for Friday, July 31, not August 1, because the normal payment date falls on a Saturday. No separate SSI deposit is scheduled anywhere in the calendar month of August.
That single scheduling shift explains what has left many SSI recipients searching for their August money: the funds are due on the last business day of July. According to the SSA's official 2026 benefit payment calendar, July 31 is the confirmed SSI payment date for the August benefit. The next SSI payment after that is September 1, 2026.
Why August 1 Triggers an Early Payment
SSI is normally paid on the first day of each month. The SSA's operating rule, detailed in Section SI 02001.005 of the Program Operations Manual, states that when the first of a month falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the agency issues that month's benefit on the previous business day.
August 1, 2026, is a Saturday. That pushed the payment forward one day to Friday, July 31. There is no exception and no delay, the calendar moves the payment earlier, not later.
Two July Deposits, Zero August Deposits
SSI recipients who check their bank accounts in July will see two deposits, one on July 1 for July's benefit, and a second on July 31 carrying August's benefit. Anyone expecting a third payment to land in August will wait until September 1.
The SSA addressed this pattern directly in an official blog post: two SSI payments arriving in one calendar month are not a bonus and not a duplicate. The second payment is the following month's benefit issued early. Recipients receive no more money than usual, they receive it on a different timetable.
Recipients managing month-to-month expenses should note that July's second deposit is August's benefit. It will not be followed by another payment until September 1.
This Pattern Occurs Three Times in 2026
August is not the only affected month. The same calendar rule produces two more irregular SSI windows before the year ends.
October will carry two SSI deposits, one on October 1 and a second on October 30. The October 30 payment is November's benefit, paid early because November 1, 2026, falls on a Sunday. November will therefore show no SSI deposit, in the same way August shows none.
December will see SSI payments on December 1 and December 31. The December 31 deposit is January 2027's benefit, issued early because January 1, 2027, is a federal holiday. January 2027 will have no SSI payment in the bank.
The complete SSI calendar for the remainder of 2026, per the SSA's official payment schedule:
Month | SSI Payment Dates |
|---|---|
August 2026 | None (August benefit paid July 31) |
September 2026 | September 1 |
October 2026 | October 1 and October 30 |
November 2026 | None (November benefit paid October 30) |
December 2026 | December 1 and December 31 |
January 2027 | None (January benefit paid December 31) |
SSI Is Different From Regular Social Security
One source of confusion is that SSI and standard Social Security retirement or disability payments follow entirely separate schedules. Regular Social Security benefits follow a Wednesday schedule tied to birth date for recipients who began collecting benefits after May 1997, the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on whether the recipient's birthday falls between the 1st–10th, 11th–20th, or 21st–31st of the month. Those who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 are paid on the 3rd of each month instead. August 2026 retirement payments for the Wednesday groups are scheduled for August 12, August 19, and August 26, for example, none of those dates are affected by the SSI calendar shift.
SSI is a distinct, needs-based program. Unlike retirement benefits, SSI eligibility is not based on work history. It is available to people who are 65 or older, blind, or living with a disability, and who also have limited income and resources, no more than $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. Recipients who want to understand how their SSI benefit differs from a retirement-based payment can find a useful comparison in this breakdown of how the SSA calculates 2026 Social Security retirement benefits.
For 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is $994 per month for an eligible individual, $1,491 for an eligible couple, and $498 for what the SSA designates an essential person, according to the SSA's official SSI payment amounts table. As of June 2026, the SSA counted 7,323,731 people receiving federally administered SSI payments, per SSA's monthly statistics.
What to Do If a Payment Has Not Arrived
Recipients who receive their July 31 deposit through direct deposit should confirm the funds posted via their bank or credit union, not the SSA website. The SSA processes payment on the scheduled date actual availability depends on the financial institution's clearing timeline.
For recipients still receiving paper checks, the SSA advises allowing three mailing days after the payment date before contacting the agency. The SSA's direct deposit page details how to switch to electronic payment, which removes postal delay from the equation entirely.
The SSA's main contact line is 1-800-772-1213. For payment status questions, the agency recommends waiting at least three business days past the scheduled deposit date before calling.
