Europe Heat Wave 2026: France Reports 1,000 Deaths

France's national public-health agency reported about 1,000 additional all-cause deaths since June 24, in preliminary and incomplete data, as a severe heat wave pushed national temperature records in Germany, Denmark and Czechia while Paris hospitals remained under intense pressure for a third consecutive day.
What France's Mortality Data Shows
Santé publique France reported more than 1,200 all-cause deaths on June 24 and more than 1,400 per day on June 25 and June 26, compared with 900 to 1,000 deaths per day recorded in April and May. The gap between those numbers accounts for the approximately 1,000 additional deaths observed since the heat episode intensified.
The agency was explicit about the limits of those figures. The electronic certificate system that generated them covers roughly 60% of national mortality, including about 25% of home deaths, 45% of deaths in residential care and nearly 80% of hospital deaths. Each additional death has not been individually attributed to heat. The true toll is likely higher. Among the deaths observed, 85% involved people aged 65 or older, and deaths at home rose by about 40%.
Health Minister Stéphanie Rist told La Tribune newspaper that the health impact of the heat wave could persist for as long as 10 days after temperatures fell. Nicolas Revel, director of the Paris public hospital authority Assistance Publique–Hôpitaux de Paris, told reporters he did not expect as many deaths as in 2003, at least in Paris hospitals, in part because treatment for overheating has since improved. More than 5,700 deaths were attributed to heat across France's full summer monitoring period in 2025, according to Santé publique France.
National Temperature Records Broken Across the Continent
On June 27, a cascade of national records fell as the heat dome shifted from western Europe into central and eastern parts of the continent.
Germany recorded a preliminary 41.5°C at Möckern-Drewitz in Saxony-Anhalt, according to the German Weather Service. That reading surpassed the previous national high of 41.3°C set only one day earlier at Saarbrücken near the French border. Both figures remain preliminary, pending formal quality-control validation. Before this week, Germany's certified national record stood at 41.2°C, set on July 25, 2019.
Denmark registered 37.0°C at both Ødum and Beldringe around 14:45, the Danish Meteorological Institute confirmed. That surpassed the country's previous record of 36.4°C set at Holstebro in August 1975, in a national measurement series stretching back to 1874.
Czechia reached a preliminary 40.9°C at Doksany on June 27, according to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, which noted the reading remained subject to formal verification. Earlier reports had cited 40.6°C and then 40.8°C as the station's measurements were updated during the afternoon.
Switzerland set a June record of 38.8°C at the Basel-Binningen station, according to Swissinfo citing MeteoSwiss. That figure exceeded the prior Basel June record of 38.0°C set one day earlier. Switzerland's all-time national maximum remains 41.5°C, recorded at Grono in 2003.
The United Kingdom broke its June temperature record on three consecutive days, with a provisional 37.3°C measured at Santon Downham in Suffolk on June 26, the Met Office confirmed. The previous UK June record of 35.6°C had been jointly held since June 29, 1957 and June 28, 1976.
Hospitals and Emergency Services Under Strain
Paris public hospitals handled nearly 3,000 adult emergency visits on both June 26 and June 27, 36% above the seasonal average, with more than half of patients aged over 75 subsequently hospitalised, AP-HP reported. Medical-dispatch calls in Paris ran nearly 80% above the comparable period in 2025. By June 28, visits fell to approximately 2,650, the first day-on-day decline, though activity remained above the equivalent Sunday the previous year.
AP-HP activated its emergency response plan across its 38 hospitals in Paris and the wider Île-de-France region to manage the sustained increase in activity.
France's red-heat-alert count peaked at 72 departments on June 25. By June 27 that had dropped to 37, and by 06:02 on June 28 only two departments, Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin in Alsace, remained under the highest alert level, with 45 departments still on orange, according to Météo-France.
In Germany, a care home in Dormagen, near Cologne, became the focus of a major emergency response after indoor temperatures exceeded 35°C. The city's final update said 16 residents required hospital transfer for medical care, while up to 30 others were moved precautionarily to an air-conditioned facility. One resident died shortly after midnight. City officials said no conclusion had been established about whether heat contributed. A second resident died later in the day. City officials noted she had already been receiving palliative care and was in a ground-floor area not affected by the highest temperatures in the upper floors.
Transport, Power and Agriculture Hit Across Europe
The heat wave caused infrastructure failures beyond the public-health system. Concrete on the A2 motorway outside Berlin buckled in two locations and the road was closed, according to the Associated Press. Deutsche Bahn advised passengers to avoid all non-urgent long-distance and regional rail travel over the weekend because of heat-related service disruptions.
In France, storms that brought some relief to the west on June 27 also knocked out electricity for 63,000 households in northern and central France by early June 28, Reuters reported, citing grid operator Enedis.
In Italy, heat stress on river systems created an agricultural emergency: saltwater from the Adriatic advanced 18 kilometres inland along the Po delta, threatening crops and protected wetlands, Reuters reported on June 28. The Italian Health Ministry placed 18 cities, including Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice and Bologna, under its highest heat alert level on June 27.
Hungary's Paks nuclear power plant was expected to reduce electricity output because the Danube, used for cooling, had become too warm, Reuters reported.
Paris Events Canceled and Open-Water Deaths Rise
Paris Pride, scheduled for June 27, was moved to September after the Paris Police Prefecture ordered organisers to cancel or face a formal ban, citing the strain on emergency services and hospitals. Reuters reported that the Solidays music festival, scheduled for three days at Longchamp, was also canceled.
Open-water fatalities mounted across both France and the UK as people sought relief from temperatures far above seasonal norms. At least 48 drowning deaths had been reported in France by June 24, according to Reuters. In the UK, seven people died in water-related incidents during the heat spell by 12:22 on June 28, the Press Association reported, citing police.
Climate Attribution: What Made This Possible
A rapid-attribution study by World Weather Attribution published on June 26 described this as the most severe heat wave on record over the study region and concluded that 2026-like June temperatures would have been virtually impossible in the 1976 climate.
The study found that comparable daytime heat was about 10 times less likely in the 2003 climate, while comparable nighttime temperatures were more than 100 times less likely than they are today. WWA also calculated that a comparable June event would have been roughly 3.5°C cooler under 1976 climate conditions and about 2°C cooler under 2003 conditions.
Approximately 45% of European urban regions included in WWA's study broke or were forecast to break indoor wet-bulb-globe-temperature thresholds during June 18 to June 29. Those thresholds, which combine temperature and humidity to assess heat strain, were not met or exceeded across comparable periods in the study's historical climate simulations.
The World Meteorological Organization noted that Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent, with temperatures rising at roughly twice the global average rate. Only about 20% of European homes have air conditioning, according to International Energy Agency analysis, and much of the continent's housing stock and transport infrastructure was built for a cooler climate.
André Corrêa do Lago, who served as president of COP30 the UN climate summit held in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025 said the heat wave had strengthened the global perception of climate urgency.
The heat wave began around June 20, driven by an omega-block atmospheric pattern, a persistent area of high pressure flanked by low-pressure systems on both sides, that trapped hot air and suppressed cloud development over much of western Europe. Storms began eroding the pattern from the west by June 27, bringing cooler air to parts of France while temperatures above 40°C remained in the forecast for Germany, Poland and Italy on June 28.
France's health surveillance system documented nearly 11,700 heat-attributable deaths during heat-wave episodes over the nine summers between 2017 and 2025, according to Santé publique France's long-term data. The June 2026 event's final confirmed toll will require months of consolidated mortality analysis to determine.
