Your Replacement Social Security Card: Free, Fast, Official
Lost your Social Security card? The SSA replaces it free of charge, with the card arriving by mail within 5–10 business days of the request being processed. Here is the official process, required documents, and July 2026 payment dates.

The Social Security Administration issues replacement cards at no cost, and millions of Americans who lose theirs can request one without ever leaving home a fact that saves people from paying third-party services that charge fees for something the federal government provides free of charge.
What the SSA Actually Offers
SSA's official replacement card page makes three things immediately clear. First, replacement Social Security cards are free. Second, local Social Security offices cannot print cards on the spot the card arrives by mail after the SSA processes the request. Third, many people do not need a physical card at all if you know your Social Security number, that is sufficient for most employers, banks, and government agencies.
When a replacement card is genuinely needed, the SSA says the fastest route is to start the application online. After the SSA completes the request, the card arrives by mail within 5 to 10 business days.
The Official Form: SS-5
Every Social Security card application whether original, replacement, or name-change correction uses Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card, available without charge directly from the SSA. The SSA is unambiguous: all its forms are free. Services charging to prepare or download this form are third-party intermediaries, not the SSA itself.
To apply, three categories of documents are required:
Proof of age a birth certificate is the standard document
Proof of identity a current driver's license, state ID, or passport
Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status for most U.S.-born applicants, the birth certificate satisfies this alongside proof of age
Acceptable documents must be originals or copies certified by the issuing agency photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted. After verifying documents, the SSA returns all originals.
Starting Online vs. Going to an Office
Beginning the process online through my Social Security is the route the SSA recommends first. After submitting an online application, the SSA will either complete the request fully online or direct the applicant to schedule an in-person appointment at a local office or card center to present the required original documents in person. For requests involving name changes and certain immigration-status situations, the in-person route is standard.
One point many applicants miss: local offices receive applications and documents but cannot hand you a card on the spot. The card is mailed from a central facility regardless of how the request is submitted.
To reach the SSA by phone: 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in most U.S. time zones. The TTY line for those who are deaf or hard of hearing is 1-800-325-0778.
NYC Residents: Four Dedicated Card Centers
New York City applicants have access to dedicated SSA card centers that handle original and replacement card services separately from general benefits offices. According to SSA's New York Region page, these are the only Social Security offices in the city where Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Manhattan residents both U.S. citizens and non-citizens can apply for an original Social Security number or a replacement card.
Borough | Card Center Address |
|---|---|
Brooklyn | 154 Pierrepont Street, Sixth Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201 |
Queens | 155-10 Jamaica Avenue, Second Floor, Jamaica, NY 11432 |
Bronx | 820 Concourse Village West, Second Floor, Bronx, NY 10451 |
Manhattan | 123 William Street, Third Floor, New York, NY 10038 |
The SSA's New York Region operates more than 100 field offices across New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
July 2026 Social Security Payment Dates
For those managing benefit income alongside other July expenses, the SSA's official 2026 payment schedule sets out when each group receives payment this month.
SSI recipients received July's payment on July 1. The next SSI payment date shown in July representing the August payment issued early falls on July 31.
Recipients who began receiving Social Security before May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI, were paid on July 2. The normal third-of-the-month date shifted because July 3 is the observed Independence Day federal holiday.
Birthday-based payment schedule for July 2026:
Birth dates | July 2026 payment date |
|---|---|
1st–10th | July 8 |
11th–20th | July 15 |
21st–31st | July 22 |
What the 2026 Maximum Retirement Benefit Depends On
The SSA does not pay one universal maximum retirement amount. The SSA's own FAQ explains that the figure depends entirely on the age at which someone claims and on their full earnings history. For someone who earned at or above the taxable maximum every year since age 22 and claims in 2026, the SSA's examples are:
Claiming at age 62: $2,969 per month
Claiming at full retirement age: $4,152 per month
Claiming at age 70: $5,181 per month
Most retirees receive less because most workers do not reach the taxable earnings ceiling every working year.
Are Social Security Benefits Taxable?
The IRS addresses this directly: Social Security retirement, survivor, and disability benefits may be federally taxable depending on the recipient's combined income and filing status. SSI payments are not taxable.
Whether benefits are taxed depends on what the IRS calls "combined income" adjusted gross income, plus nontaxable interest, plus half of Social Security benefits. The base amounts are:
Filing status | Base amount |
|---|---|
Single / head of household / qualifying surviving spouse | $25,000 |
Married filing separately (lived apart from spouse all year) | $25,000 |
Married filing jointly | $32,000 |
Married filing separately (lived with spouse at any time during the year) | $0 |
Recipients whose combined income falls below the relevant base amount pay no federal tax on their Social Security benefits. Those in the married-filing-separately category who lived with a spouse at any point during the year face the strictest treatment: up to 85% of benefits can be taxable from the first dollar of combined income.
Applying for Disability or Retirement Benefits
These are separate processes from card replacement but frequently come up for people navigating the SSA system at the same time.
Disability: The SSA's online disability application is open to adults aged 18 and over who are not currently receiving benefits on their own record, who are unable to work because of a medical condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death, and who have not been denied disability benefits within the past 60 days.
Retirement: The SSA says people can apply for retirement benefits up to four months before the date they want payments to start. The online application through a my Social Security account is described as the easiest route, phone and local-office applications are also available.
One Safety Note
Third-party websites that offer to help complete Form SS-5 in exchange for a fee are not SSA services. Because the application involves submitting identity documents including birth certificates and government-issued photo ID the SSA recommends using SSA.gov directly. Any page that asks for payment before providing the form or asks users to download software to access the form should be treated with caution.
The SSA's official starting point for card replacement is ssa.gov/number-card/replace-card.
